December Daily | 12.31.2010 and P52 : 2010 : Week 52

Yesterday's brief snow flurry left us a little hungry for more and we spur of the moment decided to drive up towards 4 Peaks today to see if we could see the snow (we could see in on he Peaks from our house.). As we drove, we decided to go on to Payson instead. GREAT decision! They had at least 6 inches up there. We got into town, found a Chili's, had lunch, and then drove around until we ended up by some golf course. Then we just got out and played for like 1/2 an hour. It had just stopped spitting out snow and was blue skies behind us. But it was REALLY cold, like 24 degrees...

Some of the best smiles I've seen from him lately!

Dad got beaned by Ryan...

We weren't quite sure if we were going to get him back out of it. Luckily we brought him a change of clothes, for he scooted down that hill upteen times on his hinny...
He kept asking, after we got him out of his wet clothes, for his "snow clothes" and to stop again...

Out of the snow, but with the snow covered 4 Peaks in the background. Out by Saguaro Lake...

A Decade...

I hadn't thought about it yet. The ending of this year. I knew New Year's Eve was on it's way and that 2011 was just around the corner.
But the ending of a decade?

Ten years gone past.

Didn't think about that one until I heard it mentioned on the news a couple days ago. 2011 ushers in a new decade.
So many changes for us, the Adam's, in that last 10 years...

  • We went from a family of 3 to a family of 4.
  • We saw the passing of 2 beloved dogs, to a family of no dogs, to a family with 2 beloved dogs again.
  • '01 saw me become pregnant, lose my job two (yes-2!) days after finding out, hold my belly sobbing on 9-11 wondering what kind of world I was bringing that baby into, to telling friends about Matthew having Down syndrome as we walked trick or treating, to ringing in the New Year of 2002 by moving and then giving birth to Matthew in March.
  • Michael worked for 3 different companies. 9-11 really changed the aviation industry. He's with a great company right now. But things are still ever changing with that company. He's gone many places and been to many different schools to further his career in that past years. He's good at what he does, and it shows.
  • Me - going from a full time Graphic Artist, to part time Graphic Artist, to pregnant with no job, to being a stay-at-home-mom earlier than we planned on, to realizing there was a plan with being a stay-at-home-mom that I didn't know about with Matthew having Down syndrome, to going back to work in a COMPLETELY different field as Matthew entered school full time, to pursuing my passion of photography that I am now cultivating.
  • Me - going from taking photos with a P/S to deciding I wanted to scrapbook, starting this blog, to getting my first DSLR, to getting published not once, but 3 times in a major Scrapbooking Magazine, to bettering my photography to doing a Project 365 2 years in a row, to not scrapping anymore to deciding to take my photography further.
  • Ryan - going from a toddler to a 13 year old teenager in Junior High. Junior High. Man. How did that happen? Went from not talking at age 3 to being a straight A student (ok - this semester he got one B in Advanced Math) that is taking advanced classes and playing 2 instruments. He's 13 and he's trying his wings. I catch glimpes of the man he's becoming very briefly every once in awhile. He's trying his Daddy's humor out on us, with bad results sometimes - LOL! ;)
  • Matthew went from the idea that we MIGHT have a 2nd child someday to a very rambucious 8 year old that has already attended 3 schools. From an idea in the back of our minds to a talking, spelling, reading, basketball-playing 8 year old who charms just about anyone he meets.
  • We moved to a different house, to a different neighborhood. But once again, it was while I was pregnant. (We moved the Jan. before Matthew was born. We moved from Tucson to Mesa while we were pregnant with Ryan.)
  • Michael and I both tunred 40 during this decade - this year will see us both turn 44.
  • We've watched our niece and god daughter go from kids Matthew's age to driving, starring on Broadway and mature into beautiful, self-assured young ladies.
  • We watched in horror as the plane hit the tower on 9-11, effectively changing our world as we knew it forever.
  • We've made many new friends (many of the as a direct result of Matthew having DS), we've lost contact with many friends and we've reconnected with many friends (esp. with the onset of Facebook!).
  • This blog - 5 years old this coming March. Snippets. And that's what it is - little snippets of our days, of our lives shared across the cyber space.
  • Instead of itching to scrapbook - I itch to run!  LOL! Talk about a change! This year saw me go from not being able to run a block to running 4.2 miles regularly 3 days a week to getting a stress fracture and having to stop. I'm on my way back from it now and am still itching to get out there and run! So run again I will. (And yes - I'll say it here and now - 2012 Rock & Roll half marathon - god willing - here I come...)
  • Michael & I went from celebrating 6 years of marriage to 16 years this coming Feb.
  • We've seen my brother and Michael's sister get married!!!!!
  • We've laughed, we're cried, we've traveled, we've grieved, we've celebrated.

We've seen a decade pass before our very eyes...

It seems so long ago, yet so very yesterday - that we were worried that our computers wouldn't turn on with the beginning of a new decade. The passing of 1999 into 2000. We wondered and worried about things to come. So many changes. So many what if's. So many things to celebrate. So many memories, so much time, so little time...

Now for some random blatherness...
It snowed today in Mesa. Yes - snowed!!!!! I don't think I've ever seen it snow here actually in the valley. It was wild. It actually shows up on the photos I took! Amazing! It sisn't stick but was still so fun to see!!!!!

It's cold here today. Supposed to be in the upper 20's tonight. Again - it's a desert. Brrrrr.....
I'm still doing the Project 52 - a photo a week - just haven't had time to get them up on the blog.
I'm still doing my December Daily, just haven't had time to get them up on the blog.
I've been relaxing the last 2 days instead of getting things done. I've watched movies instead of sitting in front of the computer. I've sat with my candles lit (since it's cool enough to have them lit) in the glow of the lights of my Christmas tree (that I should have taken down) and relaxed. There's a million and one things that I need/should/have to do and I've ignored them.
I miss scrapbooking. I miss taking photos daily. But they are so time consuming and it seems I have next to none of that lately.
I can't believe that it's the end of the week and that we'll be back in school on Monday. Seems like I blinked and the 2 weeks are over.
Matthew is full on to his birthday already!!!!! Done with Christmas and counting done the days till his birthday.
Michael's birthday is next week.
I'm loving the new Kuerig coffee maker that Grammie and Grandpy gave us for Christmas.
I'm loving that my leg is well again and that I can once again run again.
I need to edit photos, lots of photos.

I'm wondering what surprises, challenges and delights the next decade will bring...  :)

Snow! Snow here at home!!!!! Such weird weather today! Was woken up by high winds at 4am. It's gotten and stayed cold (for us!) all day and is supposed to freeze tonight. Brrrrrr!

Ryan came in saying it was snowing, and I was like "Naaaaa!". Then I looked out and yes, YES it was! For a brief moment in time...

At some point today - I looked on top of Matthew's TV and noticed this. I'm sure Ryan put it up there. He added the block from the other countdown that I have on the fireplace. You can see the photo of Matthew with Santa from last year and the glow of the lights behind.

I hear giggling and look up to see Matthew chasing Smokey around and around the table. He's ready for bed (in fact, we go not 10 minutes after this), and carrying a pair of binoculars. Smokey was carrying a toy. They were both having so much fun!

Grammie and Grandpy flew back to VT today.

I looked back over my shoulder when I was heading Matthew to bed and noticed this view. After he was asleep I captured it...

The day after! Grammie and I were so busy shopping that I totally forgot to take a photo. Totally. So I cheated and took this photo a few days later of the warming pot I got at WalMart on clearance...

We made our 1st cups of coffee from the Kuerig - love!

Christmas Day! You boys woke up at 6:30am and out we went. Stockings and Santa gifts 1st. Santa brought Cabelas Big Hunt with an extra riffle and Mater's Tall Tales, both for the Wii for you both. And books for each of you. Then we welcomed in Gma & Gpa, ate a big breakfast, then finally opened up all the gifts. The favorites from the day where Matthew's Paper Jams guitar, the 2 new RC helicopters from Uncle Paul and this Pillow Pet pup from Aunt Sherry, Uncle Rick and Reba for Matthew. Ryan also loved his Clone Wars DVD from them and his new pistol from us. Michael and I love our new Kuerig machine! Nice, pretty relaxed day. Nice and warm and the boys played out front for quite a bit later in the day...

Santa has landed...
You can see the shadow of the dogs (Bella in this one, I think) just barely in the lower left corner. I had the hardest time keeping them out of the shot...

Goodies from Santa with the empty snack plate.
Dog shadow again in the lower right corner - LOL!

Forgot a photo again (see the trend starting?) until night, so went arty again. I love the fact that I can see Michael in the chair behind me - he was off today! 4 days in a row started on that day! Wootie Woot!

Matthew - today you decided on this - your beloved Steve Nash jersey over the shirt you had on, the headband, the goggles, the gloves and then you drove your Gator. I giggled at your look and this is the look I got when I went to take a photo of you - your serious pose. ROFL! Love you, you goofball!

Sugar cookie time! We mixed, cut out, and decorated 2 trays of sugar cookies. Matthew dumped an entire shaker of sprinkles on one cookie. The cookies barely made it to Christmas Eve...

That night, Smokey decided that Grandpy was ok and that he could snuggle with him on the couch too...

Low key day today. We went up to Franks A Lot for a hot dog for lunch, then just hung out at home this afternoon. Grammie played with you boys all afternoon - Uno, Wii,& the Lego game.

Gpa gave you this kit for your birthday and it's kept you kinda occupied for the last few days. You had to punch out each of the individual shapes, fold them, glue them together and then glue them together to form the "balls". You finished it today and it looks pretty cool!

Ryan's small birthday party was today. Grammie and Grandpy came in from VT last night, so we waited for today to have it. You just had 2 friends over for cake and ice cream, with all the grandparents. We'll have a larger "friend" party later in Jan. You want to go to the drive-in movies and we just couldn't co-ordinate it this weekend with Daddy coming home and Grammie and Grandpy coming for a visit. So, you, very kindly, said we could wait! :)

A little self portrait for tonight for today was way too busy for me to have remembered a photo - LOL! ST is sick (feel better Adrian!), so Matthew and I went to Target after school, wandered around looking for things for teacher gifts. Ok  - I looked for those and he wanted to look at the usual - toys and games (DS). So - we didn't make it home until 4:30. Then it was homework, out front, baths, dinner and bed. Then I edited. And took this self-portrait.  :)

December Daily | 12.12.2010 and P52 : 2010 : Week 49

So - today, Dude and I go to WalMart. I am super duper tired and ready to get in and get out of there. Didn't make a full list, so my mind is trying to focus on all that we need to get. We start out at McDonald's, of course, for it's not a trip to WalMart without a stop there. He wants to sit, so we do. He immediately introduces himself and strikes up a conversation with the WM workers that are sitting at the next high top over. They talk to him and don't brush him off, which is nice. Then we head out to shop. I want to head around the store the way I normally do it and he has other ideas. He spies the toy section and darts up the middle... without me. So, I get him and redirect and we try again. We get to the toys and he wants to do his usual stay-there-for-hours-like-he-does-when-Daddy's-with-us. Ack. We move on again finally (we ended up there for 2.5 hours). I talk him into the cart after toys and on we go. We get our groceries and get to the produce section. He gets one of the plastic produce bags to play with. A WM worker stops me and asks me if he can ask Matthew something. I say yes figuring we're going to get a lecture on the dangers of said plastic bag. He ends up asking Matthew if he wants to be one of Santa's Elves. Matthew says "YES!", of course, and the man takes the elf hat off his head and puts in on Matthew. He turns to me and says that the reciept for it is tucked under the ear if anyone asks about it. I shook his hand and told him that he's just made MY day and that Matthew probably wouldn't take it off until Christmas - LOL! What a nice thing to do! Matthew walked to the register telling and showing everyone his Elf hat. Way too cute!!!!

Random Acts of Kindness....

Something we all need to do way more often!

Busy day today. We went to the DSNetwork's Annual Christmas party this morning. Gma came with us this year! Matthew was SOOOOOO excited to see Santa! He was in the petting zoo when Santa come out and I thought he was going to jump the fence to get to him. We went up to see him twice - once right away and once more right before we left. I have lots more photos, but they'll have to wait. I'm super tired and on my way to bed!

This afternoon I took photos for Teresa and Tyler. It also marks the 1st time that we used respite care for Matthew. He did great with her, of course. It's just Mom that worried - LOL!

At school today, you had a field trip to the Zoo. Your teacher came out and told me that you fed the turtles and that she got you to touch a stingray! So fun!!!! One of the aides took photos, so hopefully we'll see some of them later on!

Miss Lee (MT) came today. It was the last therapy session with her until after the New Year, so we took a few photos of you both together! You played Christmas songs and rang the bell.

Ryan got some kind of star chart at school in Science today, so he was working on it right after school. I like the light...

Then we went to Gma's & Gpa's for a little bit for Ryan to run the trains.

Miss Lynnette brought a cute Christmas craft for you to do during therapy today. An ornament to decorate and decopage - such fun!

The almost finished product!

Tying a ribbon on it to finish it off!

The kids were in a big hurry to play outside for a bit, so I will take a photo of the finished product tomorrow...

Tonight was Ryans' Holiday Band Concert! Gma & Gpa thought they weren't going to be able to attend, but we realized at the last minute today that they could! We got seats in the front row, which were great except when the drum line played right in front of us. Just a little too loud for Matthew's ears!
